Since the province declared a public health emergency in 2016, more than 14,000 people have died due to the toxic drug supply.

The Ministry of Mental Health and Addictions and the Ministry of Health lead B.C.’s response, including two harm reduction programs.

We audited the ministries’ implementation of overdose prevention and supervised consumption services. We also audited their implementation of the first phase of prescribed safer supply.

Mental Health and Substance Use Services for Indigenous People in B.C. Correctional Centres

While Indigenous men and women make up only six per cent of the provincial population, they make up about 33 per cent of people in custody. About 90 per cent of Indigenous people in the correctional system have a mental health and/or substance use diagnosis.

The Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA) is responsible for providing health care in B.C. correctional centres, including mental health and substance use services.
